The below tips are courtesy of the Kurokawa Hot Springs Tourist Inn Cooperative Association:

BEFORE BATHING:  Before getting in the bath be sure to splash plenty of hot water on yourself.  Avoid bathing direcly before and after meals and after drinking alcohol.

AFTER BATH:  If you rinse off your body with water after bathing, some of the beneficial effects of the hot springs might be lost.  It would be better to pat yourself with a towel to dry rather than rubbing.  After bathing relax your body for 30 to 60 minutes.

TIME AND TEMPERATURE:  At first get in a cooler part of the bath for 5 minutes, and then sit out of the water for a while.  Adjust your bathing time.

FOR BACKACHE AND STIFF SHOULDER:  Hold the edge of tha bath  and stretch yourself  for about 5 times. Then get out of the bath. Repeat 2 cycles of this.

FREQUENCY:  First day bathe once, then twice a day for several days, and after that 3 times a day.  If you exceed this you may suffer from Yuzukare (ill feeling from overbathing)

Autonomic Ataxia (imbalance):  Soak in water at a temperature of 42 C for about 5 minutes and then soak your feet in cool water for 3 minutes.

STIFF SHOULDER AND NECK:  Move your sholders and neck slowly under the falling water (Takiyu) for 5-10 minutes.

EFFECTIVE WAY OF BATHING: 5 minute soaks in 42 C water are recommended for people with diabetes, obesity or gout.
